SML! Member: Keith Hardy

I'm Keith Hardy, DTM, a charter member of SML! since 1993. I value Toastmasters and SML! because I constantly strive to test myself and to improve. Our club's stellar history of providing advanced feedback for speeches and meeting leadership has benefited me in numerous ways.

As the 2008-09 VP-Membership, my focus along with my SMiLers membership committee is to grow our membership to 30-plus. I earnestly believe every Toastmasters member who has earned his or her Competent Communicator award can benefit from a dual membership in an advanced Toastmasters club such as SML!

In my nearly 16 years of membership I have seen members use our club speech contest as a springboard to Region IV and World Championship of Speaking speech contests. They have served our District as District, Division and Area Governor. They have excelled as speech and meeting evaluators. Most importantly they have formed firm friendships with other members and me, even if their schedule no longer permits them to attend our meetings.

Charter members include Doug Ward, who won District 63 (Tennessee) Toastmaster of the Year; Tom Willison, who led District 54 (Illinois) to Distinguished District and Mark Haugh, who competed in the 2000 World Championship of Public Speaking.

Personally, I have competed in three District speech contests while a member of SML!, served as District Governor, campaigned for International Director in Toastmasters and been elected to the St. Paul Board of Education.

What I enjoy most about SML! outside of our club meetings is our road show when we have three members visit other Toastmasters clubs to demonstrate our team evaluation method. I participated in the first road show and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I plan to be a member of SML! as long as I'm living in St. Paul. I hope many, many other Toastmasters join our club, too! .
